The “Singapore Chef of the Year” Has Been Crowned!

The “Singapore Chef of the Year” has been crowned and he is none other thanKelvin Kek from Singapore Marriott Hotel!
Kelvin has emerged as the winner of the inaugural City Gas Singapore Chef Awards 2007, after going through a stringent preliminary selection and eventually beating 14 other top chefs from various hotels and restaurants with his Uniquely Singapore dish - “King Prawns with Potato Cake Served with Cod & Dry Scallop Wanton”. The event was held on 9 July 2007 at Orchard Hotel.
City Gas Singapore Chef Awards was held in conjunction with the national event – Singapore Food Festival 2007 and co-sponsored by FairPrice. The panel of distinguished judges includes G. Shanmugan (President of the Indian Association), Chef Pung Lu Tin (Trainer of RAS), Chef Eric Neo (Executive Sous Chef of Marina Mandarin/SCA National Culinary Team Manager 2007), Randy Chow (Vice President of Singapore Chef Association), Chef Tam Wang Kei (Tam Kah Shark’s Fin Restaurant), Mohana Gil (regional food author) and Ng Yong Hwee (President & CEO of City Gas).
This competition was initiated to serve as a platform for top chefs to create a dish that is indigenous to Singapore. Kelvin’s dish, which encompasses the 4 tastes – sweet, spicy, bitter and sour, best represents the 4 main cultural groups in Singapore and it won him the “Best Taste Award” as well.
The 10 “New Signature Dishes of the Year” were announced and the winner for the “Best Presentation Award” goes to Dan Koh Kim Chiew of Cherry Garden from The Oriental Singapore, “Most Innovative Dish Award” goes to David Tan Choo Guan of Pier Eleven and Tay Jun Hua of Palm Beach Seafood Restaurant walked away with the “Media’s Choice Award”.
