City Hawker Food Hunt Celebrates Singapore’s Hawker Heritage in SG50 Special

15 April 2015

Singapore, 15 April, 2015 – The 8th City Hawker Food Hunt is back to celebrate Singapore’s unique hawker heritage. The yearly extravaganza held its opening ceremony at Alexandra Village Food Centre this afternoon, inviting 60 senior citizen residents from the Queenstown community to a hawker lunch reception where they get to enjoy Popiah, Lontong, Curry Fish Head and Tau Suan, the hawker categories selected for this year’s City Hawker Food Hunt.

Guest-of-Honour, Dr. Chia Shi-Lu, Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar Group Representation Constituency (GRC), graced the event and distributed red packets to those who were present at the ceremony. At the opening ceremony, Mr. Teo Kwan Hai, Acting CEO of City Gas, said, “Building on our unique hawker heritage legacy, City Hawker Food Hunt is a great platform to celebrate and showcase Singapore’s best hawker food.”

In line with the nation’s celebration of SG50, a new award category, “Heritage Hawker Stall Award” is launched this year. The award aims to recognise hawker stalls that have been serving good hawker fare for more than 50 years, providing our pioneer generation hawkers a well-deserved recognition.

City Gas will also collaborate with National Heritage Board (NHB) to produce a special edition of SG50 City Hawker Food Guide. The 200-page bilingual publication traces the evolution of Singapore’s hawker heritage, as researched by NHB. The book also carries a listing of Singapore’s favourite 50 hawker food. It is our way of saying thanks to hawkers for their unwavering hard work in bringing tasty hawker food to Singaporeans.

Inaugurated in 2008, City Hawker Food Hunt’s mission is to celebrate local hawker heritage and to recognise hawkers’ effort in their craft. In the upcoming months, the public will have their say in voting for the best of the best stalls among the top 10 stalls chosen by the City Hawker Food Hunt Committee for each food category. The public can vote for their favourite hawker centre for the coveted “Favourite Hawker Centre” award at www.cityhawkerfoodhunt.com. In addition, the City Hawker Food Hunt will also be presenting the following awards at its year-end closing ceremony – “Cleanest Hawker Centre” and “Most Authentic Hawker Stall”.

A donation cheque of $2,000 was presented to Dr. Chia Shi-Lu and Mr. Lim Eng Hock, the hawker representative of Alexandra Village Business Association, on behalf of Queenstown Citizens’ Consultative Committee (CCC) Community Development and Welfare Fund. City Hawker Food Hunt is supported by Health Promotion Board, National Environment Agency, National Heritage Board and Singapore Tourism Board.
