City Gas and Singapore Tourism Board Shine the Spotlight on Local Award-Winning Hawkers at Golden Mile Food Centre
City Gas, Singapore’s town gas and natural gas utilities provider, is proud to support the fifth edition of the annual Hawker Spotlight, a staple event held in conjunction with the annual Singapore Food Festival (SFF). This year’s showcase was held at Golden Mile Food Centre, a familiar haunt to go to for local hawker food. The multi-storey hawker centre has 13 hawker stalls crowned with the prestigious City Hawker Food Hunt accolade, Singapore’s longest-running hawker food contest.
Ms Ranita Sundra, Director, Retail & Dining, Singapore Tourism Board, said: “Hawker culture is one of the most distinctive aspects of Singapore’s food landscape. We are pleased to once again partner City Gas to present Hawker Spotlight, as we uncover the heritage stories told by our hawkers and celebrate our well-loved hawker food. With the Singapore Food Festival being the only festival in Singapore dedicated to featuring local cuisine and home-grown culinary talents, we hope Hawker Spotlight will deepen Singaporeans’ and tourists’ appreciation of our treasured hawker culture, and preserve Singapore’s distinctive street food heritage.
Added Mr Kenny Tan, Chief Executive Officer, City Gas, “It has been a privilege supporting the Singapore Tourism Board in giving our hawkers the public attention they deserve. Golden Mile Food Centre is one of the few hawker centres in Singapore with more than ten City Hawker Food Hunt winners. In addition to the City Hawker Food Hunt, we are happy that Hawker Spotlight will elevate these hawkers to a higher level.” Many of this year’s hawker stall highlights are also helmed by second-generation and heritage hawkers who take pride in plying their trade by hand using traditional methods.
In this afternoon’s closed-door event organised for the media, Moses Lim, local celebrity and food connoisseur, treated the media entourage to a visual feast of show-and-tell, highlighting six hawker stalls which are City Hawker Food Hunt winners in the People’s Choice Local Food, Top 10 Braised Duck Rice and Heritage Hawker categories. The media gained insight into what went on behind-the-scenes at the following hawker stalls:
- Ah Xiao Teochew Braised Duck
- Da Po Hainanese Chicken Rice & Curry Chicken Noodles
- Golden Mile Fish Porridge and Seafood Soup
- Golden Mile Special Young Tau Foo
- Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly
Each hawker stall had a moment in the spotlight as Moses shared the colourful history behind each stall and their secrets to whipping up delicious local fare at affordable prices. The media tour ended with a delectable spread of food and desserts from these featured hawker stalls. To support environmental sustainability, the media were encouraged to tuck into their meals with reusable cutlery in rose gold, which the public can also redeem at this year’s City Hawker Food Hunt activities.
Hawker Spotlight is co-hosted by City Gas and the Singapore Tourism Board for the fourth year this year. In the previous editions, East Coast Lagoon Food Village, Maxwell Food Centre and Amoy Street Food Centre were featured in 2016, 2017 and 2018 respectively.
Hawker Spotlight is held as part of the SFF 2019, which runs from 12 July to 28 July 2019. For more information on the SFF 2019, please visit: www.singaporefoodfestival.com.
