Installation and Maintenance Charges

1) Why is the introduction of gas supply turn-on/termination charges necessary?
The introduction of the gas supply turn-on or disconnection charge is necessary for City Gas to recover the labour and transport costs incurred for the works carried out by City Gas’ officers/contractors at the customers’ premises.

2) Why does City Gas impose a service charge on gas supply turn-on/ termination requests when similar services are offered free-of-charge for electricity and water supply?

Unlike electricity and water supply, a soundness test needs to be carried out on the customer’s gas installation before gas supply is turned on. This is to ensure that the gas installation is free from leaks when the gas supply is introduced into the premise. For gas supply termination, the gas meter will need to be disconnected and installation properly isolated to prevent gas leaks.

3) When will the new service charges be enforced?

The new gas supply turn-on/termination charges will be effective from 1 Apr 2008. Any turn-on/termination request received on or after 1 Apr 2008 will be imposed with the new charges.

4) Who will be affected?
All new and existing gas customers.

5) Will the new service charges be applied if I were to make or call prior to 1 Apr 2008 for an appointment to be scheduled on or after 1 Apr 2008?
No. The new service charges will be imposed for requests received from 1 Apr 2008 onwards.

6) What is the procedure of the gas supply turn-on?
The existing internal gas pipe installation is first tested to confirm the installation is leak-free. The gas meter is then installed and gas supply to the premise is turned on. The gas cooker will also be operated to confirm that it has a good burning flame.

7) What is the procedure of the gas supply termination?
The gas supply is isolated via the removal of the gas meter. The gas installation is properly plugged off to prevent unnecessary gas leaks.

) Is the gas supply turn-on charge to be imposed on top of the current standard gas pipe installation charge?
No. The standard gas pipe installation charge of $100/- (which covers extension of kitchen gas pipe and cooker connection) or $50/- (for gas cooker connection only) is already inclusive of gas supply turn-on. The new gas supply turn-on charge is to be imposed only if gas supply is required without any gas pipe-work extension or cooker connection, as in most condominium apartments.

9) Will the service charge be imposed on me if I were to apply for temporary gas supply termination due to renovation?
Temporary gas supply termination due to renovation usually involves the disconnection of gas cooker. The current standard $50/- charge applicable for the cooker disconnection includes the gas supply termination and removal of the gas meter. No further charge will also be imposed for the restoration of gas supply and gas cooker connection upon the completion of your renovation.

10) How will the service charges be billed?
The service charges will be reflected in the customer’s utilities bill under “Gas Supply/Termination Charge”.
